Hangmen Also Die! (1943) Operation Anthropoid Nazi Assassination

Had no idea this Fritz Lang World War 2 film, Hangmen Also Die was based on Operation Anthropoid when I went in. Having a keen interest in military history I knew of the deadly task at hand. Interestingly the BBC have a series running at the moment investigating the training of SOE’s (Special Operations Executive) that specialised in espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance. Two SOE officers excelled the special training in the UK, one Czech the other Slovak, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš. Both assigned with the task of being dropped back into their Nazi occupied home country with a deadly mission, to assassinate a high ranking Nazi leader. That Nazi asshole was dubbed The Hangman, The Butcher Of Prague, a truly hideous man who would also become know as one of the architects of the Holocaust, that beast was Reinhard Heydrich.

Opening in space, with a wet your panties laughing scene involving a hilarious looking freaky baby like rubber alien, naked, speeding down a corridor. Running as fast as his little legs can take him, this alien is being hunted down. In his arms he carries a large container which he frantically manages to jettison out into space. The container starts a trajectory on to Earth, the year is 1959.

My gosh! This one hits harder than a sucker punch from super steroid filled boxer, Ivan Drago. I wasn’t expecting it! Damn man that was an intense ride! What a film! Absolutely terrifying!

Rented this on VHS cassette tape in my teens, though I didn’t realise until many years later this was the second and last movie to be directed by legendary special effects guru, Douglas Trumbull. His first, and always to be a favourite sci-fi movie for me, was the eco warrior Bruce Dern film, Silent Running. A film with a message to mankind and of course those three very cute robots called Huey, Dewey and Louie.

The Prowler (1951) Voyeuristic Creepy Sexual Tension Noir Drama

The Prowler has been sat, patiently waiting for me to get on with it. Nearly started it a few times but knew I was really going to enjoy this one, so I was happy to wait till it was the perfect time. Knowing it was directed by Joseph Losey, who hits more times than not and being even more psyched by the two stars, Evelyn Keyes and Van Heflin.

Never Let Go (1960) Deranged Peter Sellers Vs Dam Busting Lip Stick Pedder

Yep that’s right, Peter Sellers as a deranged car salesman. I have to say I never knew he played such a villainous character as he does in Never Let Go. He plays Lionel Meadows, a sinister, pencil thin mustachioed, wildly smiling and vicious, dodgy car showroom wheeler and dealer. An aggressive, tough gangster who runs his business like a machine, ticking all the boxes to ensure everything goes smoothly and he stays, king of his empire.

Jigsaw (1962) Brighton Based Murder Mystery Puzzler

The city of Brighton and Hove on the south coast of England brings us this thrilling, twisting and turning tale of terror to our screens. A murder mystery which we get to watch from start to finish, daring us to workout who the devious culprit could possibly be. It maybe a slow burn story, leaving no stone unturned as we follow our two main detectives as they try to solve this brutal murder case. But following the clues like a jigsaw puzzle, watching these two experienced investigators slot each piece into place is brilliant to watch. Unfortunately the pieces of this particular jigsaw puzzle might not just fit together!
