Here’s what the ole Wolfensteiner had been watching in December 2019.
The Mandalorian has been the, all the family sit down, event of the year. They got the pacing just perfect. With enough old school Star Wars to keep us original nerds happy whilst the nonsense of the new trilogy plays out for the newer gen. I admit to my fur raising with a slight mix of disappointment and rage when I saw the small run-times of each episode. But now I’m at peace with the force and love the way this series has captured the feeling of mixing a, man with no name, western and the feel of ripping a live action comic book story right from the pages.
The Witcher on Netflix. I’m only two episodes in and I’m extremely impressed. I don’t know the games or the books other than by name so I haven’t anything to compare it to. It’s Clash Of The Titans, it’s never not gonna be compared to Game Of Thrones, it’s got a bit of Potter and some Merlin thrown in. It ain’t cheap. Can’t wait to see more.
That’s it for the TV.
18 films this month and a total of 223 this year
715 since the start of the blog in January 2017.
To start off with I watched loads of British thrillers which I’d found on YouTube. I did a post called Outstanding Selection Of Rare Movie Gems In The Flick Vault. Well recommended. So many rare and forgotten gems on there.
Blind Corner (1964) – Wolfman Rating 8.5 – IMDB Rating 6.7
Tomorrow At Ten (1963) – Wolfman Rating 7 – IMDB Rating 6.9
A Place to Go (1963) – Wolfman Rating 8.5 – IMDB Rating 6.6
Girl in the Headlines (1963) – Wolfman Rating 7 – IMDB Rating 6.5
A Prize of Arms (1962) – Wolfman Rating 8 – IMDB Rating 6.7
Calculated Risk (1963) – Wolfman Rating 7.5 – IMDB Rating 6.7
The Secret Partner (1961) – Wolfman Rating 7.5 – IMDB Rating 6.6
A Study in Terror (1965) – Wolfman Rating 7 – IMDB Rating 6.5
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) – Wolfman Rating 7 – IMDB Rating 6.5
It’s hard not to like The Rock and Statham joking around in a giant big budget movie. It is what it is. Vanessa Kirby was really good. The film was great until it got to Samoa and then it just got a little too silly. Still top family action packed fun.
12 Monkeys (1995) – Wolfman Rating 9 – IMDB Rating 8
Man I loved this science fiction masterpiece from Terry Gilliam. It was a lot more shouty and chaotic than I remembered but still awesome. I did do a post called La Jetée (1962) Twelve Monkeys Future Past a few years ago
6 Underground (2019) – Wolfman Rating UNRATED – IMDB Rating 6.1
This is the first film since doing this movie blog that I couldn’t finish. Actually I made ten minutes. It’s insane! The editing and direction is so cliched, slow-mo, fast cuts, chops. Then add the worst characters you’ve ever seen all no-stop screaming at each other. It’s like if a youtuber was given 50 million to make a movie and this is what would of been created. I wish Netflix would stop wasting our money on such shit film scripts and ideas!
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019) – Wolfman Rating 6 – IMDB Rating 7.6
This new Spider-man doesn’t fair much better. They some how think making something completely chaotic will magically make it good. Just slow things down and develop good characters. It can be done Marvel, just look back to your back-cat. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) was perfection.
Sin City (2005) – Wolfman Rating 10 – IMDB Rating 8
Has to be ten! It’s got my uber-babe Rosario Dawson in some leather strapped suspenders thing! On another note, damn this movie is so freaking awesome. All the stories are incredible. Another one of those perfect movies you see when they came out but haven’t seen again since. Introduced to my daughter whilst we ate BBQ ribs. We chatted about it after, happy Dad.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) – Wolfman Rating 7 – IMDB Rating 7.5
Not as good as the first and a long way off the mark to the superb second but this third outing in the film series is still charming and it’s hearts in the right place.
Klaus (2019) – Wolfman Rating 7.5 – IMDB Rating 8.3
Common theme going on here with all these new films. Just because no one has long attention spans doesn’t mean lets throw everything at the screen. Not every kid has ADHD. It doesn’t need to be complete bonkers or on speed to catch the young generation. Look at The Iron Giant (1999) it’s just beautiful. To be fair to Klaus it does calm down once you get past the half way point. The story is great and the animation is just delightful.
The Bishops Wife (1947) – Wolfman Rating 10 – IMDB Rating 7.6
Oh my this was my first time watching it. I absolutely loved it. It’s so perfectly played out. You know you’ve seen a wonderful Christmas film when after watching it you say to yourself “I look forward to seeing that again next year“. Thanks to Maddy Loves Here Classic Films for the nudge.
Flash Gordon (1980) – Wolfman Rating 8 – IMDB Rating 6.5
It’s so fantastically camp, cheesy and a real product of it’s time. I used to listen to the soundtrack on cassette tape non-stop. It was on the telly and we made the kids watch it with us. Haha I think they liked it? I think they were more transfixed with a, what the hell is this kind of fascination. It’s a perfect 80’s sci-fi with a great spot the Brit cast. The music is fab and oh there’s that wonderful beautiful lady I’ve been in love with for 35 plus years. Princess Aura
Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019) – Wolfman Rating 6.5 – IMDB Rating 7
This was the first Star Wars movie I really wasn’t fussed about seeing at the cinema. Which is quite sad. I didn’t like the last two. Force Awakens is insanely over hyped. It’s not very good at all and The Last Jedi is a joke. So there I am having to fork out another load of money for four tickets with no joy in my heart. But I sucked it up, it’s xmas ffs. Went in with the lowest of low expectations. You know what I actually enjoyed this one. With the complete mess of the last two somehow they had to pull something out the bag. Yeah it’s filled with rubbish. Horses of spaceships seriously wtf. But it wrapped things up in some nice little touches to the beloved originals. This old miser was ok with it. Of course it could of/should of been a million times better but with the last two episodes to contend with, I couldn’t see an end in this Galaxy far far away.
And on that note I bid you goodbye 2019 and hello 2020. Thank you to everyone who has read, liked and commented over the year. I do really appreciate it. Wishing you all a superb and a wonderful new year. Big love…. Mikey
PS Remember the whole month of January is being dedicated to my VHS action rental memories of 80s and early 90s . Every day a new post. Why! Because I’m mad and fancy a challenge. Pop in and see what the lunatic has been watching if you got a moment. It’s starts tomorrow…………………………………..
